The verdict of the scriptures is that in Kali Yug the holy names of Shri Hari are the best and the only means of deliverance. There is simply no alternative to Harinam. This is also the instruction of the Acaryas. However, there are 10 offenses which have to be avoided at all costs to unleash the full potential of the holy names. Committing these 10 offenses has become second nature to us and it is very difficult for any sadhak to overcome this greatest obstacle in his sadhana.
bahu janma krishna bhaji prema naahi haya
aparaadha-punja taara aachaya nischaya
“If one does not achieve pure love of God after worshiping Lord Krishna and chanting His Holy Names for many lives, one should understand that one has certainly mountains of offenses in one’s heart.”
aparaadha-shunya haye laya krishna-naama
tabe jiva krishna-prema labhe aviraama
“If and only if one chants the Holy Names of Lord Krishna by becoming totally devoid of all offenses against the Holy Names. Deity and Abodes, then that soul will be able to attain the pure love for Lord Krishna without any interruption.” (Navadvip Dham Mahatmaya, Chapter 1, Text 49 & 50)
Nevertheless, the Acaryas have revealed that the names of Nitai Gaur do not consider such offenses and they award love for Lord Krishna to us even in an offensive state.
nitai-caitanya bali yei jiva dake; suvimala krsna-prema anvesaye thake.
“If one feelingly and loudly calls out the names of Nityananda and Gauranga, the purest Krsna-prema (pure love of Krsna) comes searching after such a person.”
aparadha badha tara kichu nahi kare; nirmala krsna-preme tara ankhi jhare.
“The offenses (which may be present) don’t create any obstacles in path of achieving this love and tears start flowing from his eyes in pure ecstatic love.”
svalpa kale aparadha apani palaya; hrdaya sodhita haya prema bade taya.
“In a very short, the offenses themselves flee and the heart becomes completely purified and thus the love furthur increases. (NDM 1.52-54)
Even among the names of Nitai and Gaur, Nitai’s name is much more forgiving and tolerant as far as the 10 offenses are concerned. There are a few offenses which even Gaur’s name cannot tolerate and forgive so easily, such as offenses against Vaishnavas and the offense of committing sin on the strength of the holy names.
‘nityananda’ balite haya krsna-premodaya;aulaya sakala anga,asru-ganga vaya.
“Simply by chanting the name ‘Nityananda’ one awakens his love for Krsna.” (CC 1.8.23)
It is said that whatever is favorable for bhakti, one must immediately accept it, and whatever is unfavorable for bhakti, one must instantly reject it (anukulyasya sankalpa and pratikulyasya varjanam). This general injunction can be modified in the following way, especially for Kali Yug- whatever is favorable for Harinam, one must immediately accept it, and whatever is unfavorable for Harinam, one must instantly reject it. In fact, it is said that the advancement of a devotee can be gauged by the degree to which he is able to apply this injunction.
It is an indisputable fact that Nitai’s name is so forgiving that it destroys all the 10 offenses against Harinam and awards one love of Krishna very soon. No Gaudiya Vaishnav can refute this fact. So it can be safely concluded that taking shelter of Nitai’s name is favorable for Harinam japa and kirtan. And when we know it is favorable then we must instantly accept it. It is as simple as that. Just accept it. It is the symptom of an advanced devotee that if he finds something favorable to bhakti then He immediately accepts it.
If you still think that taking shelter of Nitai’s name is not super anukul to Harinam then kindly revisit the teachings of our Acaryas. Although the shelter of Nitai’s name can be taken in many forms, Shrila Nitaipreshthji Bhaktiratna Sadhu recommends it in the form of Vayulekhan which is a very merciful process just like Nitai’s name. Shrila Vrindavan das Thakur writes in Nityanandashtakam that Nitai is the root of the creeper of bhakti. The water which goes in the root nourishes the entire creeper. So just imagine how much you will progress if you will water this root of bhakti directly by writing Nitai’s name in the air (Vayulekhan). After knowing all these truths, you must yourself conclude whether Nitai’s name is super anukul to bhakti or not. Or, whether you want to include Nitai Vayulekhan in your daily sadhana or not. It is completely up to you to decide now. Joy Nitai.
