Nitai Vayulekhan – It’s New, Why Should I Accept It? 

We wish to advance in Bhakti. We wish to chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra purely. We wish to obtain love of Godhead in this very lifetime. What shall we do? Some say, worship Tulasi Maharani regularly. Some recommend regular reading and hearing. While some suggest Kirtan in the association of advanced devotees. It is said that the quality of chanting is the thermometer of Bhakti. So we judge the effectiveness of a particular advice by analyzing its impact on the quality of our chanting. And, to be honest, we are ready to follow and adopt any spiritual practice which improves the quality of our chanting. Shrila Prabhupad recommended us to chant to the Pancha Tattva mantra before beginning our Harinam rounds precisely for the same reason. It is said that Shrila Jagannath das Babaji established the importance of chanting the Pancha Tattva mantra before chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra.
Why did he do so? 
To make Harinam offenseless.

Did anyone oppose it?

Shrila Prabhupad writes,
“When chanting the names of the Pancatattva, one should fully offer his obeisances:

sri−krsna−caitanya prabhu nityananda
sri−advaita gadadhara srivasadi−gaura−bhakta−vrnda.

By such chanting one is blessed with the competency to chant the Hare Krsna maha mantra without offense.

Everyone wholeheartedly accepts the Pancha Tattva mantra because it assists the Hare Krishna mahamantra. The six goswamis of Vrindavan have not emphasized its importance so much in their writings that it must be chanted before the Hare Krishna mahamantra. Still nobody opposed the Gaudiya Vaishnav Gurus who introduced and recommended this extremely merciful mantra, especially Shrila Jagannath das Babaji. Nobody termed it as concoction or invention. Everybody could understand that the names of Pancha Tattva were more appropriate for the fallen souls of Kali Yug and there was no Rasabhas in the Pancha Tattva mantra.

The rationale for chanting the Pancha Tattva mantra is provided by Shrila Prabhupad as follows,

“Considering the position of the people of this age, however, the chanting of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s name is more essential than the chanting of the Hare Krsna maha mantra because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the most magnanimous incarnation and His mercy is very easily achieved. Therefore one must first take shelter of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu by chanting

sri−krsna−caitanya prabhu nityananda
sri−advaita gadadhara srivasadi−gaura−bhakta−vrnda.

(Sri Caitanya caritamrta Adi lila 8.29−31)

We must accept the most merciful spiritual practice of Nitai Vayulekhan along similar lines. There is no doubt that Nitai is even more merciful than Gaur and His mercy is received most easily. And there is no trace of Rasabhas or any other philosophical error in taking shelter of निताइ nam. We are ready to adopt everything to improve the quality of our Harinam chanting then why such a bias against Nitai’s name? Why such a bias against that personality who is the greatest wholesale distributor of pure Harinam in the past, present, and future? Please have faith in this process and reap the astonishing results. We must remember that the Acaryas warn against only those practices which are against the philosophical conclusions of our Paramapara. They themselves introduced many practices according to the time, place, and circumstance, but none of them were against the shuddha-siddhant. Similarly, Nitai Vayulekhan is also the need of the hour and nobody can challenge its effectiveness on the basis of siddhant. One may reject it only because it is ‘new’. But let me tell you one thing, at a particular point of time in history, the Pancha Tattva mantra was also ‘new’. I hope you got the clue.

‘New’ and ‘Old’ maybe a criterion of accepting or rejecting a process but ‘Right’ and ‘Wrong’ is surely a much higher criterion for the same. When Gauranga Mahaprabhu appeared, Sankirtan was also a ‘new’ practice for the people to attain God-realization. But still He preached it widely knowing its effectiveness and appropriateness for Kali Yug. Joy Nitai.

Constantly Glorify Nitai

sahasravadana vandon prabhu-balarama yanhara sahasra-mukhe krsnayasodhama

“With a thousand tongues we should incessantly glorify the Supreme Lord Balarama (Nitai), because His thousand mouths as Ananta Sesa constantly glorify Lord Krishna.” (CB Adi-khanda 1.12)

Such a lovely verse. Shrila Vrindavan das Thakur explains us logically why and how we must glorify Nitai. He says that we must glorify Nitai because Nitai is constantly glorifying Krishna. And how we must glorify Him? We must glorify Nitai with a thousand tongues because He glorifies Krishna with His thousand mouths as Ananta Sesa. Wow! Such a transcendental Nitaimay logic. Now nobody can challenge why we glorify Nitai so much. Shrila Vrindavan das Thakur has defended us for all times to come with his authoritative and extraordinary logic.

CC Ādi 8.48

nityānanda-līlā-varṇane ha-ila āveśa
caitanyera śeṣa-līlā rahila avaśeṣa

He ecstatically described the pastimes of Lord Nityānanda, but the later pastimes of Caitanya Mahāprabhu remained untold.

👆Beautiful verse. Shrila Vrindavan das Thakur was well aware of Gauranga’s supreme position. He also knew how pleasing it was to Nitai to describe the glories of Gaur. Still He could not restrain himself from ecstatically glorifying Nitai in Chaitanya Bhagawat. He got such an avesh that even Gaur’s lila remained avasesa (untold). This is the kind of intoxication that Nitai gives. He wants everyone to worship Gaur but how is it possible to focus on anyone else after coming in touch with Nitai. Shrila Vrindavan das Thakur is proving by his own example that one cannot contain one’s spontaneous inclination towards glorifying Nitai even if that leads to less apparent glorification of Gaur Radha Krishna.

Nitai Vayulekhan – A Cure for Enjoying Mentality

We all are struggling with our enjoying mentality. We think we are the enjoyers. We often lose enthusiasm in devotional service because we perceive it as an obstruction to our enjoying tendency. The problem is that there is no real lasting enjoyment for the soul in this material world. Especially when the most blissful path of devotional service is forsaken. In short, we cannot afford to give up devotional service for our own self interest. But how to deal with our enjoying mentality which does not let us go forward on the path of Bhakti? Let us try to understand the problem more deeply. The enjoying mentality is a product of false ego. And the predominating deity of false ego is Sankarshan. And Sankarshan is no one but a portion of the plenary portion of Nitai. Is this something which you are reading for the first time? It may be new for you but it is the eternal truth. I am not saying this. Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī revealed this secret to Mahārāja Parīkṣit in Shrimad Bhagwatam. It is Sankarshan who controls the enjoying mentality of the living entity.

SB 5.25.1

śrī-śuka uvāca

tasya mūla-deśe triṁśad-yojana-sahasrāntara āste yā vai kalā bhagavatas tāmasī samākhyātānanta iti sātvatīyā draṣṭṛ-dṛśyayoḥ saṅkarṣaṇam aham ity abhimāna-lakṣaṇaṁ yaṁ saṅkarṣaṇam ity ācakṣate.

“My dear King, approximately 240,000 miles beneath the planet Pātāla lives another incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is the expansion of Lord Viṣṇu known as Lord Ananta or Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa. He is always in the transcendental position, but because He is worshiped by Lord Śiva, the deity of tamo-guṇa or darkness, He is sometimes called tāmasī. Lord Ananta is the predominating Deity of the material mode of ignorance as well as the false ego of all conditioned souls. When a conditioned living being thinks, “I am the enjoyer, and this world is meant to be enjoyed by me,” this conception of life is dictated to him by Saṅkarṣaṇa. Thus the mundane conditioned soul thinks himself the Supreme Lord.”

From the above verse it is clear that Nitai’s partial expansion Sankarshan is the final in-charge of the enjoying mentality. If we pray to Nitai sincerely then Sankarshan will surely stop dictating this false conception of life that “I am the enjoyer, and this world is meant to be enjoyed by me”. When we do Nitai Vayulekhan, Nitai’s heart melts upon us and He orders Sankarshan to reduce this illusory enjoying mentality. Consequently, we naturally become more enthusiastic in all other processes of Bhakti after doing Nitai Vayulekhan. Who knew that the greatest and seemingly unsolvable problem of enjoying mentality had such a simple solution! That is, Nitai Vayulekhan.

Guru and Disciple

🌺 I have finally realized one thing that there is a huge difference between a student of a Guru and a disciple of a Guru. The former has a connection on the mental plane alone and the latter is the one who has a real heart to heart connection. Students of a Guru may be many but faithful disciples connected via the heart are only a few.

🌺 Unflinching faith in the teachings of Shri Guru is an achievement millions of times greater than the attainment of all mystic perfections and complete control over the mind and senses.

🌺 Without faith proper one can only become an egoistic unrealized scholar. (Like me)

🌺 With faith and determination only can one realize that which is unrealized.

🌺 A Guru who teaches a disciple how to love Nitai is more merciful than the most merciful.

🌺 A student has a formal relation with the Guru whereas a disciple has a deep loving relationship with the Guru ornamented by unflinching faith. I wish I could one day become a real disciple of my Guru-pada-padma.

🌺 When a submissive attitude towards the spiritual master is developed then all negative thoughts and doubts are burned in the fire of his realized Vani.

🌺 It is Nitai only who manifests Himself most mercifully as Shri Guru and takes away unlimited sins of a sincere disciple on the pretext of initiation.

🌺 The most confidential secret of Nitai bhakti and the supreme potency of Nitai Vayulekhan which were fully realized by Shrila Nitaipreshthji Gurudev after 25 years of intense bhajan were revealed to us for free out of his causeless mercy. That’s why we are not able to fully appreciate the rare wealth that we have received.

A sincere disciple must respect, serve and love one’s godbrothers and godsisters as a token of genuine respect for Sri Guru.

Glories of Nitai’s Name From Shrimad Bhagawatam and Chaitanya Bhagawat

SB 5.25.11

yan-nāma śrutam anukīrtayed akasmād
ārto vā yadi patitaḥ pralambhanād vā
hanty aṁhaḥ sapadi nṛṇām aśeṣam anyaṁ
kaṁ śeṣād bhagavata āśrayen mumukṣuḥ

“Even if he be distressed or degraded, any person who chants the holy name of the Lord, having heard it from a bona fide spiritual master, is immediately purified. Even if he chants the Lord’s name jokingly or by chance, he and anyone who hears him are freed from all sins. Therefore how can anyone seeking disentanglement from the material clutches avoid chanting the name of Lord Śeṣa? Of whom else should one take shelter?”

If this is true for Lord Shesh then it is surely true for Lord Nitai as well. Why? Because:

sṛṣṭy-ādika sevā, — tāṅra ājñāra pālana
‘śeṣa’-rūpe kare kṛṣṇera vividha sevana

Nitai executes the orders of Lord Kṛṣṇa in the work of creation, and in the form of Lord Śeṣa He serves Kṛṣṇa in various ways. (CC Ādi 5.10)

saṅkarṣaṇaḥ kāraṇa-toya-śāyī
garbhoda-śāyī ca payo ’bdhi-śāyī
śeṣaś ca yasyāṁśa-kalāḥ sa nityā-
nandākhya-rāmaḥ śaraṇaṁ mamāstu

May Lord Nitai be the object of my constant remembrance. Saṅkarṣaṇa, Śeṣa Nāga and the Viṣṇus who lie on the Kāraṇa Ocean, Garbha Ocean and ocean of milk are His plenary portions and the portions of His plenary portions. (CC Ādi 5.7)

Gauranga Mahaprabhu glorified Nitai in the following manner in the 7th Chapter of the Antya Khand of Shri Chaitanya Bhagawat,

“ataeva tomare ye jane prìti kare, satya satya krsna kabhu na chadibe tare” 

“Therefore it is certainly true that Krsna will never leave anyone who becomes attached to You (Nitai).” 

It is quite clear from the above verse that those who are attached to Nitai can never be forsaken by Shri Krishna. When we write someone’s name repeatedly our attachment for that person increases. Thus, Nitai Vayulekhan is the simplest way to get attached to Nitai. And getting attached to Nitai is the simplest way to be accepted by Krishna. Krishna may reject someone who is attached to Krishna but He will never reject anyone who is attached to Nitai. That is why doing Nitai Vayulekhan along with the chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra is in the greaest self interest for all devotees who never wish to be rejected by the Supreme Lord Krishna because of one’s natural tendency to make mistakes.

Nitai’s Mercy is Unique

🌺 Continously praying to Nitai for His mercy is the best way to become a bona fide Vaishnav. (Doya koro more Nitai doya koro more…)

🌺 Shrila Bhaktirakshak Shridhar Goswami Maharaj gives a great example to describe the unique mercy of Nitai. He says that when you a go to a particular department of a hospital and they refuse to admit you then you go to another department. You go to that department which is more accommodating. Similarly, we all are suffering from material disease since time immemorial and we need proper treatment now. We may directly go to Gaur-Krishna but He may refuse to admit us. He has hundreds of valid reasons to reject us. However, Nitai is the most accommodating Lord. He does not refuse to treat any soul. Even if there are hundreds and thousands of reasons to reject someone, Nitai would invariably ignore all such reasons and embrace a soul who approaches Him.

🌺 When I was in the greatest need, it was Nitai only who extended His helping hand as a true friend. It was Nitai only who heard my prayers. Other Gods listen to prayers of only surrendered souls but Nitai hears the prayers of even the most rebellious souls. Even if someone says that I will not be able to obtain Radha-Krishna if I will focus too much on Nitai, I will continue to do that till my last breath. As they say, a friend in need is a friend indeed.

🌺 When I started doing Nitai bhakti, for the first time I felt that someone is really listening to my prayers. Before that all my prayers were ignored by the son of Maharaj Nanda as I did not qualify to be heard because of lack of surrender.

sad-ańga śaranāgati hoibe jāhāra
tāhāra prārthanā śune śrī-nanda-kumāra

🌺 anant-koti aparadh hoibe jāhāra

tāhāra prārthanā śune śrī-rohini-kumāra (Nitai)

🌺 Material intoxicants damage us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually whereas the most intoxicating name of Nitai invigorates us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Which one do you want?

🌺 Krishna is ready to give us everything minus His pure devotion. Nitai is ready to give us everything plus pure devotion for Krishna.

🌺 Nitai bhakti is the greatest way of honoring (pujala) the path of spontaneous devotion (raga-patha) in the mood of awe and reverence (gaurava bhange) by maintaining a respectful distance from the esoteric pastimes of Gaur Radha Krishna and taking full shelter of the most merciful pastimes of the most magnanimous Lord Nitai. Nobody can forcefully enter the domain of Gaur Radha Krishna without being invited but by entering the universal domain of Nitai one naturally obtains an invitation from the inaccessible domain of Gaur Radha Krishna without any doubt or difficulty.

🌺 The topmost worship is the worship of the devotees of the Lord and the topmost devotee of the Lord is Nitai. Thus, when we worship Nitai we perform the tompost worship by worshipping the tompost devotee of the Lord. This is our secret! (It becomes double topmost)

Laws of Karma

The law of Karma is considered supremely powerful. A bad action inevitably leads to a bad reaction in the form of suffering. The Lord has made such a strict law for the welfare of the living entities so that they can learn a leesson not to repeat the sin after undergoing the suffering. Surprisingly, Nitai manipulates this law in favor of the violators. He forgives us for all our sins and thus saves us from the suffering. But He does not compromise with our real welfare. He forgives in such a way that we learn the same lesson of not repeating the sin but without any suffering from a bad reaction. Thus, the lesson is still learnt, not by pain but by his fatherly love and affection. The aim of punishment is fulfilled (learning of the lesson) without any punishment. This is Nitai’s law of Karma.
