Catch Nitai and Krishna Will Catch You!

Shri Gauranga Mahaprabhu told Nitai while offering a prayer to Him,

‘svatantra’ kariya vede ye krsnere kaya hena krsna para tumi karite vikraya

“You are able to sell Krsna, who is proclaimed as fully independent in the Vedas.

Shrila Bhaktisiddhant Saraswati Thakur comments on the above verse as follows.

“The Supreme Lord is not dependent on anyone, but Sri Nityananda Prabhu has taken control of Him by serving Krsna. Sri Krsna is certainly the property of Sri Nityananda.”

(Source: Commentary on CB 3.7.43)

This is a very significant statement by Shri Gauranga Mahaprabhu. We know that Nitai can take away the independence of the conditioned souls as He is their master and origin. But it is such an astonishing truth that Nitai can even interfere with the supreme independence of Lord Krishna by dint of His devotional service. Who is saying this? Krishna Himself in the form of Gaur. Krishna is admitting that, “Even though I am described as supremely independent, I am not. Even if I don’t wish to reveal myself to anyone, you can make me do that if you wish. Even if I don’t wish to give my pure devotion to anyone, you can distribute it freely without even asking from me. You can sell me at any price. You can even sell me for free if you want. I am certainly your property. You completely own me. I don’t have free will in front of you. For the rest of the creation and for the knowers of the Vedas I am supremely independent. But nobody knows that I am a saleable commodity in your hands.”

Therefore, those who are worshipping Nitai need not worry about attaining Krishna. In fact, there is no requirement of even a separate endeavor to please Krishna. The fact that we are worshipping Nitai is itself most pleasing to Krishna as Nitai is Krishna’s topmost devotee. And Krishna says that “My devotees are not my devotees, the devotees of my devotees are my true devotees.” And if Nitai is pleased with our devotion then He can surely grant us all realizations related to Krishna. The best thing is that it is much more easy to please Nitai than to please Krishna. For a fallen soul it will take many lifetimes to become dear to Krishna. But to become dear to Nitai is very easy. Nitai puts no conditions at all. He is Himself very much eager to take us to Krishna. However, He doesn’t want to cause any inconvenience to Krishna as He has immense love for Krishna. He won’t take us to Krishna unless we become qualified. So before selling Krishna to us, He first of all makes us qualified to receive Krishna. He purifies our heart like He purified the womb (heart) of Devaki before Krishna could enter it.

Some even raise this question that, “If we will get attached to Nitai then we will attain Nitai only. We will not attain Krishna. If throughout our lives our consciousness will be absorbed in Nitai then how will obtain the lotus feet of Krishna?” This doubt has been resolved by Shri Gauranga Mahaprabhu Himself during the same prayer.

“ataeva tomare ye jane pìti kare satya satya krsna kabhu na chadibe tare”

‘Therefore it is certainly true that Krsna will never leave anyone who becomes attached to You.”

So even if simply become attached to Nitai, Krishna will Himself come running after us. Even if Nitai won’t sell Krishna to us, Krishna will sell Himself to us if we become attached to Nitai. Isn’t it amazing. Nobody can refute these statements of Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Gauranga Mahaprabhu has authorized Nitai bhakti and given full authority to living entities to become attached to Nitai and He has also given full authority to Nitai to sell Krishna to whomever He wants to. Therefore, catching Nitai is catching Krishna only but in an infinitely more practical way. Otherwise, it is impossible to catch the most crooked Shyamsundar.
