It is stated in the Vedas:
yasya deve para bhaktir
yatha deve tatha gurau
tasyaite kathita hy arthah
(Svetasvatara Upanisad 6.23)
“Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the imports of Vedic knowledge automatically revealed.”
You must be well aware of this important Vedic verse. But did you know that this verse is actually pointing towards Nitai bhakti? It is generally told that Para-bhakti is exclusively meant for the Supreme Personality of Godhead Gauranga-Krishna. However, this verse advocates that the faith and devotion which we have for Gauranga-Krishna, that same faith and devotion we should have for the spiritual master, if not more. In fact, para-bhakti must be first applied to the spiritual master and then only it can be applied to the Supreme Lord Gaur-Krishna. To such a devotee, in fact, to such a mahatma (great soul), all the imports of the Vedic knowledge are automatically revealed. Here, the word Guru is surely and primarliy applicable to the Adi Guru, the original spiritual master of all living entities, Lord Nitai. How can we have equal faith in our Guru and Krishna when don’t even have equal faith in Adi-Guru Nitai and Krishna. This is false logic. Nitai is the fountainhead of all Gurus. He cannot be bypassed.
Majority of devotees do not factually have equal faith in Nitai and Krishna. What to speak of having equal devotion! And not knowing Akhand-Guru-tattva, they directly want to have faith in their own Diksha Guru and Shiksha Guru as much as they have in Krishna. But in reality they fail to do so. This is also the reason why the real imports of Vedic knowledge do not settle in their minds and hearts. And eventually they tend to deviate from the path of devotional service because of never-ending philosophical doubts.
This verse also reveals how a Nitaibhakta can grasp the most subtle imports of the scriptures spontaneously. Since a Nitaibhakt is factually having equal faith in Nitai and Krishna, he is sure to understand all tattva quite clearly. Without even making any special effort. And he is sure to develop long lasting and factual faith in his Guru-pada-padma, the Guru-paramapara, and the process of devotional service. All his doubts will be vanquished by the extraordinary mercy of Adi-guru Nitai. This verse literally proves how a Nitaibhakta is truly a mahatma (great soul). Thus, fundamentally, yatha deve tatha gurau means yatha Krishna tatha Nitai. Thank you very much. Joy Nitai! Hare Krishna!
