Worship of Gaur and Radha Krishna

🌿 Are we neglecting the worship of Gaur or Radha Krishna?

🌷 It may be falsely claimed that we are displeasing Nitai by excluding the worship of Gaur by quoting the following verse spoken by Nitai in Chaitanya Bhagavata 2.15.69:

“Anyone who worships Me but does not worship Lord Gauranga, brings pain to Me. Such a person suffers birth after birth.”
Our response:

In the above verse, Nitai is condemning only those who do not worship Gaur but only worship Him with no faith in Gaur.

🌷1. Let us first of all see how Gaur is worshipped. As per Jaiva Dharma by Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakuar:

“Vrajanatha: Since Shri Gauranga is the original complete Absolute Truth, how should one worship Him?

Babaji: As one worships Lord Krishna by chanting the name and mantra of Lord Krishna, so one should worship Lord Gaur by chanting the name and mantra of Gauranga. One may worship Lord Gaur by chanting Krishna-mantras, or for that matter one may worship Lord Krishna by chanting Gaur-mantras. They are all the same. Anyone who thinks Lord Krishna and Lord Gaura are different is a fool. He is a servant of Kali-yuga.”

Presently, the standard for initiation in our Sadhu Maharaj Sanga is to do Nitailekhan and Hare Krishna Mahamantra chanting. You may object that as Gauranga’s Name is no longer being airwritten or chanted in japa, we have left out the worship of Gaur. As per the above quote from Jaiva Dharma, it is quite clear that one may worship Gaur by chanting Krishna’s mantra (krishna-mantre gaurapuja va gaura-mantre krishnapuja-sakalai eka).

So, Gaur’s worship is possible by the chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra as authorized by Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakur. Thus, nobody can say that we are worshipping only Nitai and not Gaur because we are diligently following Gaur’s most important order to chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra. Also, we are worshiping Radha Krishna in the topmost way by the japa and kirtan of the Hare Krishna mahamantra.

🌷2. Nitai gets extremely displeased with those who perceive Him as independent of Gaur. That can be so displeasing to Nitai that He may curse someone to suffer birth after birth for that. We know that there were sects in Bengal who used to worship Nitai, Gaur, or even Advaita as separate Gods without paying attention to the relation they had with each other.

However, we perceive Nitai as the topmost servant of Gaur and His dearmost associate and brother. Nitai is our Prabhu and Gaur is Nitai’s Prabhu. As long as we have this understanding of Vrindavana das Thakura in Chaitanya Bhagavata 1.17.153, there is no problem at all.

amara prabhura prabhu shri gaurasundara
e bada bharasa citte dhari nirantara

Nitai will never mind if we worship Him more as long as we accept in our heart that Nitai is Gaur’s dearmost servant and serves Gaur in many ways. Remembering Nitai means remembering Gaur and Radha Krishna as stated in Chaitanya Bhagavata. When we perceive Nitai as Gauranga’s topmost servant then Nitai is happy. And when we airwrite निताइ and sing His Name then Gaur is happy.

Thus, we are making both the Brothers happy. We know that Nitai is the Adi-Guru, the Guru of all Gurus. if He gets displeased with anyone then that devotee cannot advance an inch in devotion. In fact, one will lose whatever Bhakti one has. (yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado
yasyaprasadan na gatih kuto ‘pi).

However, our devotees are showing contrary results by getting more and more realizations, taste, and bliss in devotional service and harinam. And as Shrila Prabhupada says, phalena paricīyate: one’s success or defeat in any activity is understood by its result. Therefore, it is a certain truth that Nitai is not at all displeased with us.

It is also important to remember that if one displeases Gaur, one can be forgiven by Nitai’s worship but if one displeases Nitai then even Gaur’s worship does not help, as stated by Shrila Jiva to Lord Nitai in Navadvipa Dham Mahatmya 4.34,35:

tomara karuna vina gaur nahi paya,
shata janma bhaje yadi gauranga hiyaya.“Even if someone worships Gauranga whole-heartedly for a hundreds births, without Your
mercy Nitai, they will never attain Him.”

gaura danda kare yadi tumi raksha kara,
tumi jare danda kara gaura tara para.

“If Gauranga wishes to punish someone, Nitai, You always protect that person. But, if You punish someone, the person will go away from Gauranga eternally.”

🌷3. Another point to note is that our philosophy is not to worship only Nitai. We simply try to focus more on Nitai so that attainment of Gaur Radha Krishna becomes a greater reality. Focussing more on Nitai does not exclude the bhajan of Gaur Radha Krishna.

It is known that Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is worshipped by sankirtana yajna. And we do worship Mahaprabhu by performing daily sankirtana of Gaur nam, Nitai nam, and Hari nam as an offering to Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Additionally, our Guru and Acarya, Shrila Bhaktiratna Sadhu Maharaj, has personally recommended many a times to remember Gauranga even while singing or chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.

🌷4. It was Shrila Bhaktiratna Sadhu Maharaj who established and advocated the chanting of the Gaura Gopala Mantra – “Gauranga”, which is composed of four syllables for the first time so openly in this world. It is due to his untiring efforts that many devotees all over the world have felt attracted to Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

He had published Chaitanya Bhagavat (the prominent biography of Nitai Gaur) and distributed it at cost price widely in order to spread the glories of Nitai Gauranga. He has also written and published an explanatory translation of Chaitanya Chandramrita (a book that contains the exclusive glories of Gaur) and the first chapter of Navadvip Dhama Mahatmaya (a book that contains the glories of Gaur’s Abode).

You can read them here:

Shri Chaitanya Chandramrita
https://nitaaiveda.com/SG_Translated_and_Main_Scriptures/Shri_Chaitanya_Chandramrita.htm
Shri Navadvipa Dham Mahatmaya
https://nitaaiveda.com/SG_Translated_and_Main_Scriptures/Navadvipa_Dhaam_Mahatmya.htm

Moreover, he published small booklets containing the 100 Names of Gaur and Scriptural Evidences in support of Gaur’s Godhood. For more than a decade, He has been taking devotees on Navadvipa Parikrama, many a times throughout the year.

Even today, our preachers all over the world are spreading the glories of Gaur by establishing that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead on the basis of the Vedic Scriptures. How can anyone claim that we are worshiping only Nitai and not Gaur? Can’t they understand how much Nitai must be pleased with all these efforts to glorify Gaur?

🌷5. Shrila Bhaktiratna Sadhu Maharaj has never stopped anyone from worshiping Gauranga through His name and has no intention to ever do so. In fact, He Himself is very pained by those who stop others from chanting the holy names of Nityananda and Gauranga.

He has written, “Even if they are devotees, I will never forgive deep within my heart, those who discourage or stop others from chanting the names of Nityananda and Gauranga or from airwriting निताइ, along with Hari nam, because they mercilessly strip those souls from the only chance to offenselessly chant Hari nam, simply by giving the excuse of the Panch-tattva mantra, which is a prayer not a mantra for chanting like Nitai nam and Gaur Nam.”

Therefore, even though the present standard for aspiring disciples and followers is to do Nitailekhan and chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, still many of the disciples continue to chant Gaur’s Name and will continue to do that in future as well without any hindrance.

🌷6. Please read these verses from Sri Chaitanya Charitamrit,

kālā-kṛṣṇadāsa baḍa vaiṣṇava-pradhāna
nityānanda-candra vinu nahi jāne āna
(CC Adi 11.37)

“The twenty-second devotee of Lord Nityānanda Prabhu was Kālā Kṛṣṇadāsa, who was the ninth cowherd boy. He was a first-class Vaiṣṇava and did not know anything beyond Nityānanda Prabhu.”

hoḍa kṛṣṇadāsa — nityānanda-prabhu-prāṇa
nityānanda-pada vinu nāhi jāne āna

(CC Adi 11.47)

“The thirty-sixth devotee of Lord Nityānanda was Hoḍa Kṛṣṇadāsa, whose life and soul was Nityānanda Prabhu. He was always dedicated to the lotus feet of Nityānanda, and he knew no one else but Him.”

In these verses it is clearly mentioned that these two associates of Nitai knew no one but Nitai. They were exclusively devoted to Nitai. Do you think Nitai was displeased with them? Do you think Nitai will make them suffer birth after birth?

Let us summarize. The verse quoted in the beginning from Chaitanya Bhagavata can never be even remotely applicable to us because of our staunch faith and regard for Lord Gauranga.

In fact, the basic reason for emphasizing more on Nitai is to WIN THE HEART OF GAUR as it is the shortest and surest way to do so. This stress on Nitai’s Name and Glories was an offering by Shrila Bhaktiratna Sadhu to Lord Gauranga on His Appearance Day (Gaur Purnima, 2015). Offerings are given to those whom we adore and whom we wish to please.

He wrote this on that day, “I promise to Gaur today on His appearance day that I will try to spread the airwriting, singing, and chanting of Nitai’s name even more vigorously than before since it the only hope for the rebellious conditioned souls to become favourable towards Nitai Gaur and Radha Krishna bhakti according to all our beloved acharyas.”

The Glorification of Unparalleled Love

निताइ! The Hare Krishna Mahamantra is replete with Radhey-Shyam’s love for each other. Radha’s love for Krishna and Krishna’s love for Radha. The Mahamantra is not just the glorification of Radha and Krishna, it is the glorification of their unparalleled love. It is overflowing with the divine couple’s madness for each other. We celebrate their eternal love by singing the Mahamantra! निताइ!

निताइ! We can’t imagine how grateful Jagai and Madhai must be to Nitai throughout their lives. Everyday they must be crying profusely in gratitude. Their every drop of tear was a testimonial of Nitai’s unparalleled mercy.  निताइ!

निताइ! Writing Nitai’s name in the air with the tip of your index finger is not only eco-friendly but also ego-friendly.
निताइ! Fortunate are those who have an inclination to serve. Blessed are those who get a chance to serve.

निताइ! Respect, service, and love have to be unconditional or else they cease to be what they are.

The Lord of Mercy- Doyal Nitai!

karama geyana, kichu nahi mora,
sadhana bhajana nai
tumi krpa-moya, ami to kangala,
ahaituki krpa cai
(Bhajana Lalsa by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur)

What is Bhaktivinoda Thakur saying? He is saying that just accept that you can’t do sadhana, you can’t do bhajana, you don’t have karma, you don’t have jnana, you don’t have any qualification or yogyata to attain Gauranga and Radha-Shyama. You can only consider yourself as a kangaal and as a beggar and you can start begging for ahaituki kripa means causeless mercy because there is no cause to give you mercy. Even though he himself was performing a lot of sadhana but even if you perform sadhana, you should always consider your sadhana as zero. On the strength of sadhana, you can never attain the Lord. Sadhana is to keep you disciplined. Sadhana is to teach you, you know how to engage your senses in the service of the Lord. But attainment of the Lord is impossible without mercy. And who is the Lord of mercy? Doyal Nitai! So-

heno nitai bine bhai, radha-krishna paite nai
dridha kori’ dharo nitair pay
(Nitai Pada Kamla by Srila Narottama Das Thakur)

nitaiyer charana satya, tahara sevaka nitya,
nitai-pada sada koro asa

And drdha kori dharo nitaira paya and then he is saying dharo nitaiyer charana du’ khani. And in the first line he is saying nitai-pada-kamala. This entire bhajana is you know full of Nitai’s charana. Everywhere he is first of all saying that Nitai’s Lotus feet are more cooling than millions of moons. Then he is saying without Nitai you cannot attain Radha-Krishna, so ‘catch’ Nitai’s Lotus feet. Then he is saying that when Nitai will be merciful on you, then you will automatically attain Vraja dhama, you will see the chinmaya dhama, you will see the real dhama. Your transcendental eyes, senses will awaken and you will see Radha and Krishna. braje radha-krsna pabe. So dharo nitaiyer charana du’ khani. Then he is saying that nitai-pada sada koro asa. Then in the last line he is saying narottama bodo duhkhi, nitai more koro sukhi; rakho ranga-charanera pasa. The entire bhajana means take shelter of Nitai. The entire bhajana the only crux, the jist of the bhajana is that just take shelter of Nitai. Lotus Feet means you have to take the shelter of entire Nitai. You cannot take the shelter of Lotus feet exclusively. You have to take shelter of Nitai. Narottama Dasa Thakur is saying.

He was the Supreme Personality of Godhead and He had no shame, no hesitation, no ego when he went from door to door and he was begging. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sakshat Balrama Sarva Shaktidhara, omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, He was not having any ego in begging and we fallen souls, we vibhinamsha, tathastha shakti, badha jiva, badha souls, we have ego that too in front of the Lord. We may have ego in front of some ordinary person. But why are we having ego in front of the Supreme Personality of Godhead who had no ego in begging from us? He was begging from us and we can’t beg from Him? That is very shameful. So we should not request, we should beg Nitai.

Proof of Nitai Vayulekhan by Shrimati Radharani Herself

Govinda dasa Kaviraja, a famous Vaisnava poet, and younger brother of Ramachandra Kaviraj provides another strong proof of the potency of the written holy name. He received the title Kaviraja from none other than Shrila Jiva Goswami. He is famous for his bhajan “Bhajahu re mana, sri nanda-nandana abhaya-caranaravinda re”. In his ‘Padavali’ he wrote a beautiful bhajan describing the condition of Radharani when Krishna left Vrindavan and went to Mathura. The title of the bhajan is “Maribo Maribo Sakhi Niscoy Maribo”. In that bhajan, Shrimati Radharani requested her girlfriends to WRITE the name of Krishna on Her body.
tomrā joteko sakhī theke majhu sange

marana kāle krishna nāma likho mora ange

“All you sakhis, that are staying with Me, please write Krsna’s name on My body as I die.”
Shrimati Radharani Herself is establishing the glories of the process of writing the holy names of the Lord. She is revealing that the written holy name of the Lord is as good as the Lord Himself. A pure devotee always desires that when he leaves the body he should have the highest remembrance of the Lord. Here, Shrimati Radharani is also talking about her impending death due to extreme pain of separation from Krishna. And what is her desire at the time of death? Her desire is that Krishna’s name be WRITTEN on her body. She deems it the highest kind of remembrance as when Krishna’s name will be written on her body, it will be as good as receiving the direct touch of Krishna. What more proof does anyone want?

Unique mercy of Nitai

🌺 Shrila Bhaktirakshak Shridhar Goswami Maharaj gives a great example to describe the unique mercy of Nitai. He says that when you a go to a particular department of a hospital and they refuse to admit you then you go to another department. You go to that department which is more accommodating. Similarly, we all are suffering from material disease since time immemorial and we need proper treatment now. We may directly go to Gaur-Krishna but He may refuse to admit us. He has hundreds of valid reasons to reject us. However, Nitai is the most accommodating Lord. He does not refuse to treat any soul. Even if there are hundreds and thousands of reasons to reject someone, Nitai would invariably ignore all such reasons and embrace a soul who approaches Him.

Important discussion on Nitai and Radha

If somebody asks you, “Who is the topmost devotee of Krishna?” What shall be your response? If you say Nitai is the topmost then he may ask, “What about Radharani?” And if you say Radha is the topmost then he may ask, “What about Nitai?” Is it not confusing? Numerous times we have heard that there is no greater devotee of Krishna than Radha and the same we have heard about Nitai innumerable times. It indeed a very mysterious question. Let us understand the relationship between Nitai-Krishna and Radha-Krishna in greater detail to demystify the question at hand.

Nitai is the existential potency (sandhini) of Krishna and is also the first manifestation of the vaibhava feature of Krishna. Thus, He falls in the Vishnu Tattva category and assumes the role of the Supreme Personality of Godhead as Krishna’s elder brother. On the other hand, Radha is the pleasure potency (hladini) of Krishna and assumes the role of the Lord’s dearmost consort.

When we consider Nitai-Krishna relationship, we address Nitai as Sevak Bhagwan (the Supreme Personality of Servitor Godhead) and Krishna as Sevya Bhagwan (the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is served by Nitai).
As far as Radha-Krishna relationship is concerned, Radharani is described as the topmost Ashraya Vigraha (topmost reservoir of devotion for Krishna) and Krishna as the Supreme Vishaya Vigraha (Radha’s supreme object of devotion).
Even though both Nitai and Radha are devotees, there is a categorical distinction between them. In short, it is a well understood fact that only like terms can be compared. So Nitai and Radha can never be compared as they belong to their own unique categories. Nitai is the topmost sevak and Radha is the topmost ashraya-vigraha. A ‘Sevak’ and an ‘ Ashraya-vigraha’, each can be addressed as a ‘devotee’. Thus, Nitai can also be called the topmost devotee and Radha can also be glorified as the topmost devotee. It is not at all contradictory.
The only point to remember is that simply by doing ‘seva’ of the ‘Sevak’ Bhagwan Nitai one gets ‘Ashraya’ of the ‘Ashraya Vigraha’ Radha. If you don’t agree then read how Shrila Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami got Radha’s ashraya just by defending Nitai’s supreme position in front of his brother. Service of Nitai is done by pleasing one’s spiritual master, serving the devotees of Nitai, spreading the glories of Nitai, taking shelter of Nitai’s name, form, pastimes, etc., and last but not least, moving one’s finger in the air to do Nitai Vayulekhan. 🙏😊

Bhakti – Devotional Service is Nitai and Radha

Bhakti is translated as ‘devotional service’ by Shrila Prabhupad. Shrimati Radharani is the embodiment of ‘devotion’ and Nitai Balaram is the embodiment of ‘service’. Thus, whenever we come across the phrase “devotional service” we must remember Nitai and Radha. This, also means that Bhakti is nothing but Nitai and Radha. 🙏😊
