Nitai is an Ocean of Mercy

Joy Nitai!

Nitai is very merciful. We say this all the time. We hear this all the time. We have read it so many times that Nitai is very merciful, Nitai is so merciful. But now we say it very casually that Nitai is very merciful but can we really fathom the depth of His mercy? He is an ocean of mercy and when we try to ponder upon His merciful nature, we have no other option but to surrender. His mercy is so overwhelming. When we start feeling His mercy, I mean even a small small fraction of it, He is an ocean of mercy. You can never fathom, you can just say He is very merciful, but you cannot exactly define the word ‘very’ here. The word ‘very’ is very limited. It describes Nitai’s mercy in a very limited way.

So we can just keep on thinking and contemplating within your mind and heart about the mercy of Nitai. The depth because He is an Ocean of Mercy. karuna sindhu. And the more you take shelter of His name, the more you chant His name, you sing His name aloud in kirtana, you do Nitai Namlekhan, the more you realise how deep the ocean of mercy He is. How deep it is. You can actually enter the ocean, go deeper and deeper and you’ll be more surprised at every moment. You will realise His merciful nature with much more clarity.

In the beginning its just an abstract concept for you. It is very vague that yes yes, He is very merciful. The more you take shelter of His name, the more you realise His true.. the true nature of Nitai comes out from the name and you start getting overwhelmed. You get surprised and tears also start falling from your eyes because it is very natural because such kind of mercy is completely inconceivable. It is incomprehensible. Nobody can understand it. Nobody can conceive it. Nobody can even think of it, the kind of mercy Nitai possesses, bestows upon the fallen souls. The more you realise it, the more you will be overwhelmed and the more you will be attracted to Nitai, the more you will surrender to Nitai. You will take His shelter.

nitai-pada sada koro asa
narottama boro dukhi,
nitai more koro sukhi
rakho ranga-caranera pasa

So just like we say Krishna is rasaraj, He is an ocean of Rasa. We say it very casually but the more a devotee realises that, the more one falls in love with Krishna. The more he realises the rasa, the madhurya of Krishna. Similarly we say Nitai is karuna sindhu, He is an ocean of mercy but just saying is not enough, when you start realising that how merciful He actually is then that mercy attracts you so much that you fully surrender to Nitai. You realise that no one is going to actually deliver you other than Nitai. There is no other gati for you other than Nitai.

There is no other shelter. So that is why just philosophy is not enough, practice is very important. When you actually take shelter of His name through Nitai Namlekhan, you practice it. Sadhana is also very important. You do Nitai kirtana, you practice then the philosophy becomes alive. Simply by understanding philosophy, by reading articles and posts or just knowing that Nitai is very merciful is… you know, that is also good but that is not enough. We have to practically realise that and for that you need to practice, you have to do sadhana. And you have to please the Nitai Bhaktas.

So philosophy alone won’t help you so much. You have to accompany it with practice also. Very important. And then you will see that philosophy helps practice and practice helps you to understand philosophy in a better way. They both are complementing each other. Philosophy improves practice and practice improves our philosophical understanding.

Nitai’s name makes your heart nirmala (pure), sheetal (cool), and komal (soft)

Joy Nitai!

Nitai’s name instantly makes our heart nirmala, sheetal, and komal. ‘Nirmala’ means it removes all impurities from the mirror of our heart. Our Chitta. ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ (Sri Siksastakam, verse 1). Makes it very beautiful, clean, free from all impurities, fragrant, very beautiful. Our chitta shines with purity as soon as we take shelter of Nitai’s name.

It also makes our heart sheetal. bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ (Sri Siksastakam, Verse 1). It is always burning, our heart. saḿsāra-biṣānale, dibā-niśi hiyā jwale (Hari Hari Biphale Janama by Srila Narottama Dasa Thakur) So it immediately cools down our heart, feels so cool. The burning sensation is gone immediately as soon as you take shelter of Nitai’s name, you can feel as if all heat is removed from your heart. It has become very very cool, pleasant. You feel pleasant from inside. Sheetal.

And it makes our heart komal. The hardness of our heart which obstructs our connection with Gaura Radha-Krishna, that ego, that being puffed up. himsa garva vibhishana- garva, ahankar, that pride. So when we take shelter of Nitai’s name, no matter how hard our heart is, it starts melting, it starts getting soft, very very soft. You can feel it. Your heart becomes so soft that it is very easy for you to attract the attention, attract the heart of Gaura Radha-Krishna actually.

With all these three positive changes- the purity of your heart, with softness, and a cool heart, you are able to attract the heart of Gaura Radha-Krishna. That is why without Nitai’s mercy, it is simply not possible to attain Gaura Radha-Krishna because without qualification, it is only Nitai who is ready to enter our heart, reside in our heart, operate on our heart. No other Lord will enter in an unqualified state. And Nitai forces Gaura Radha-Krishna.. means without Nitai’s mercy our bhakti is one sided because it is not genuine. Our real bhava does not come, real emotions for the Lord, real sentiments of devotion for the Lord do not come up because of impurity, because of hardness, because of sensual desires.

ye yatha mam prapadyante
tams tathaiva bhajamy aham
(Bhagavad Gita, 4.11)

Sri Krishna says this in Gita, because our approach, because our heart is full of disqualifications or bhakti is not at all genuine, that is why Krishna also does not reciprocate properly. If we genuinely worship or serve or remember Krishna, then He also thinks of us. He also tries to serve us when we genuinely try to serve Him. He promises this in Bhagvad Gita.

ye yatha mam prapadyante
tams tathaiva bhajamy ‘aham’

If we do Krishna bhajana, Krishna is ready to do our bhajana but problem is that with an impure heart and an egoistic heart, hard and burning we are not able to do Krishna bhajana. So it remains one sided. Two sided it will be only when our one side is genuine, then from the other side something will come. But if our side is fake and hollow, then from the other side nothing will come. So if you want two sided bhakti, you want real reciprocation of the Lord, then you have to take shelter of Nitai’s name.

Nitai Vayulekhan Leads to Suddha-nam!

 

Nitai Vayulekhan leads to Seva-unmukhta.

Seva-unmukhta leads to suddha-nam.
Thus, Nitai Vayulekhan leads to suddha-nam!

Shrila Prabhupad has translated the one word ‘Bhakti’ into two words, namely, ‘devotion’ plus ‘service’. In his preface to the Nectar of Devotion, he puts it very simply “Bhakti means ‘devotional service.” 

Also, ‘devotion’ is synonymous with ‘love’. Thus, he translated Bhakti also as ‘transcendental loving service’ of the Lord.

Shrimati Radharani is the embodiment of ‘devotion’ or ‘love’ and Nitai Balaram is the embodiment of ‘service’. Thus, whenever we come across the phrase “devotional service” we must remember Nitai and Radha. This, also means that Bhakti is nothing but Nitai and Radha. Devotion without service is incomplete, and vice versa. This further indicates that both Nitai and Radha are having a very strong functional connection even though it is not explicitly visible in the Pastimes. This is corroborated by the fact that all our Acaryas who teach devotional service are always considered either one of the confidential associates of Radha or a manifested representation of Nitai. 

“In all the ancient scriptures of devotional service and in the more recent songs of Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura, Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura and other unalloyed Vaiṣṇavas, the spiritual master is always considered either one of the confidential associates of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī or a manifested representation of Śrīla Nityānanda Prabhu.” (Shrila Prabhupad’s purport to CC Adi 1.46)

With the real import of the word ‘service’ clear in our mind, let us analyse this epic verse oft-quoted by our Acaryas in regards to Nam tattva:

atah sri-krishna-namadi
na bhaved grahyam indriyaih

sevonmukhe hi jihvadau

svayam eva sphuraty adah

“No one can understand the transcendental nature of the name, form, quality and pastimes of Sri Krishna through his materially contaminated senses. Only when one becomes spiritually saturated by transcendental service to the Lord are the transcendental name, form, quality and pastimes of the Lord revealed to him.” (Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu 1.2.234)

Here, the greatest emphasis is laid on the word sevonmukhe which basically means having an inclination to serve. Nitai is seva (service) ‘personified’. That is why He is known as Sevak Bhagwan- the Supreme Personality of Servitor Godhead. He is the very foundation of service (bhajana-taru-kandam). Let me come to the point now. It is a top secret that becoming seva-unmukha is possible only by becoming Nitai-unmukha. That is, inclination towards service is possible only by inclination towards Nitai as Nitai is Seva and Seva is Nitai. Thus, the more we become inclined towards the name, form, qualities, pastimes, associates, and abode of NItai, the more chances are there that the name, form, qualities, pastimes, etc., of Gaur-Krishna will be revealed to us. Therefore, it is recommended to do Nitai Vayulekhan before chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra as it is the easiest way to remember the name, form, qualities, etc., of Nitai. In fact, Nitai Vayulekhan factually increases our propensity to serve manifold. Those who regularly perform Nitai Vayulekhan definitely feel a strong urge to serve Hari, Guru, and Vaishnavs to the best of their abilities. Another literal meaning of unmukha is turning one’s vision towards something. This is exactly what we do in Nitai Vayulekhan. We try to direct our vision towards Nitai both externally as well as internally in His most merciful syllables’ form. As a result, our service attitude increases automatically and the pure name of Krishna manifests on our tongue.
